Artwork text and archival details
Adapted from the artist’s archive.
Wet stones form a passage in the cool moonlight of a New Zealand forest. A warm glow rises from an opening and casts long shadows among them. The arrangement suggests a gathering of immense figures looking towards a source of light that remains partly concealed.
Cool and warm illumination give the rocks different presences within the same scene. The archive reads their apparent obstruction as a metaphor for forces that can suppress expression, while the emerging light offers another possibility. The photograph holds these suggestions within the material detail of stone, darkness and reflected colour.
