Artwork and cultural context

A journey at different paces

White-clad travellers move along a road, one accompanied in a wheelchair. Their bodies form a loose sequence of walking, pushing and sitting. The group portrait presents a shared journey through different means of moving.

The title identifies the travellers as Jain pilgrims in Rajasthan. Ahimsa, the principle of non-violence towards living beings, is central to Jainism. Different postures and forms of companionship give the pilgrimage a human immediacy in the photograph.
