Reflections of India
Pilgrim family, Indien
2011
A closer look at the work
Several people stand close together beneath a stone arch. Grey, yellow and dark-violet wraps create differently sized areas of colour. Light reaches faces and fabrics while the passage behind remains dark. A flag rises above heads on the left. Tall architecture surrounds the group, but the people’s proximity determines the encounter.
Pilgrim Family identifies a shared journey. The photograph makes that common context visible without making individual postures alike. Gazes, positions and distances remain different. The arch is both a spatial threshold and a pictorial frame, gathering the people while the passage opens behind them. A group portrait emerges between a brief gathering and a route continuing beyond the image.
