Reflections of India
Pilgrim on purple dust 3, Indien
2014
A closer look at the work
A white sari stands out against pink and violet ground. From the elevated viewpoint, open space almost completely surrounds the walking woman. Small red patterns articulate the pale cloth as its folds enclose her body. Her dark shadow runs diagonally towards the lower right, adding a second, flatter figure.
The broad empty surroundings place a single step at the centre. Body, fabric and shadow follow different contours: the walk has a direction, the cloth moves more softly, and the shadow extends that movement across the ground. The pilgrim title supplies a context without determining its personal meaning. What remains visible is a person crossing a public space transformed by colour.
