Reflections of India
Sadhus with holy cow, Indien
2014
A closer look at the work
A small group sits on the ground at night beside a cow. Red patterned cloth covers much of the animal. Warm light catches faces, fabrics and hands; a small fire and rising smoke lie near the seated people. A fence, pole and bare tree bound the dark space behind.
Sadhus with Holy Cow supplies a religious context. The photograph itself records a specific proximity: people, animal, fire and objects share a limited illuminated area. Their varied positions resist a uniform posture. Group portrait and setting meet through details of occupation, while the larger night space remains only suggested.
