Artwork and cultural context

A small shrine within the landscape

A low shrine of stone and brick stands amid dense vegetation beside a path. The image explores the relationship between a small built form and its surroundings. Photographic attention falls on an unobtrusive place rather than a monumental temple facade.

The Kolli Hills lie in Tamil Nadu’s Namakkal district and form part of the Eastern Ghats. Their shrines connect religious practice with a mountainous landscape. Here, stone, brick and vegetation become visible layers of a place shaped by people.
