Adapted from the artist’s archive.
Durga and Hanuman are seen from an unusual angle at the Vaishno Devi Temple in northern India. The viewpoint moves away from a frontal encounter with the figures. Strong backlighting reduces the prominence of their daytime colours and gives their silhouettes a luminous surround.
Made in 2014, the photograph explores how light changes the presence of religious sculpture. The figures retain their physical form while seeming to turn towards a space beyond it. The scene opens a relationship between material, belief and perception, without resolving that relationship into a single interpretation.
