Artwork and cultural context

The street as a densely layered image

A large bundle of branches nearly conceals its carrier’s upper body. Other people, doors and coloured walls remain visible around it. Unevenly distributed forms compress the street into a scene shaped by work and limited space.

Nandagram, also known as Nandgaon, belongs to the Braj pilgrimage circuit. The photograph approaches the place through a street situation. Religious history and everyday provision occupy the same inhabited space rather than forming separate worlds.
