A closer look at the work
A tall window opens onto a narrow street canyon between densely windowed buildings. Pale curtains frame the view, divided by a dark crossbar. Distance is soft and hazy while nearby fabric takes on violet and gold tones. The surrounding interior remains outside the crop.
View of Manhattan presents an outlook as a mediated experience. Glass, frame and curtains stand between eye and city, belonging to the photograph as fully as distant façades. Outside becomes an image within a room without becoming completely accessible. The work holds open a tension between the desire for overview and the limited proximity of one window.
