Artwork and cultural context

Narrative made spatial

Painted figures and an altar form a colourful spatial narrative. The archive identifies Vishnu on Garuda, the elephant Gajendra and a crocodile, with a Jagannatha altar on the left. The photograph presents both the figures and the staging of a story within a devotional room.

Vishnu’s rescue of Gajendra is a narrative subject in Indian art, including examples documented in museum painting collections. That comparison helps explain how a religious story can move between a two-dimensional image and a sculptural group.
