Reflections of India
Yamuna Temple, Indien
2011
Artwork and cultural context
An encounter within the temple
A man sits beside a red shrine on the left; a person with a walking frame occupies the passage on the right. Light and architecture divide the space. The photograph draws its tension from the proximity of devotional image, body and everyday movement.
The artwork title locates the scene at the Yamuna Temple in Vrindavan, within the Krishna pilgrimage region around Mathura. Rather than presenting religious surroundings through monuments alone, the photograph attends to their daily use.
