André Wagner – Contemporary Photo Artist

ANDRÉ WAGNER · PHOTOKAUSTLER

Photography beyond the visible spectrum.

For more than two decades, André Wagner has been using infrared photography, long-term exposure and nocturnal light to explore how time, memory and spiritual experience become visible.

His large-scale works are created on journeys, in sacred places, in landscapes and urban spaces, have been shown in museums and galleries, are in public and private collections, and are published as strictly limited, signed editions.

Selected series of works

Three ways to see light.

Infrared, night and long-term exposure form different color spaces of my work.

  • Waves of golden light traces over dark water under a blue night sky.

    Romance of Elements

Fire, water, wind and time meet in a choreography of light. Through long-term exposure, the landscape becomes a resonant space of elemental movement and luminous traces.

  • Zwei in Tücher gehüllte Personen im gedämpften Licht vor dunklem Hintergrund.

    Reflections of India

A rapprochement with India has been established over many years: light, colour, everyday spiritual life and human encounters combine to form images between immediate experience and memory.

  • Low sun shines through a tree by the water; a bright ring of light overlays the scene.

    The infrared journey

Color beyond the usual spectrum. Infrared transforms landscapes into interspaces where perception, memory and a possible future of vision interlock.

Topics and perspectives

  • What does a camera see that the human eye cannot see?

Infrared photography doesn't just make the invisible visible. It questions whether our usual perception actually shows reality -- or just a small slice of it.

  • How can time be photographed?

Long-term exposure does not stop time, but condenses it, and movement, light and transience leave traces hidden from the individual moment.

  • What changes when photography is created in sacred places?

For many years, André Wagner has worked in India and in spiritually influenced places. His photographs do not document any religion. They examine how experience, memory and atmosphere shape an image.

  • When does a work of art become part of architecture?

In art-in-construction projects, motif, format and material are created in dialogue with space. Photography is not added afterwards, but rather changes perception, light and movement within architecture.

  • Can Blockchain Boost Trust in Photographic Art?

Digital certificates and blockchain technology open up new possibilities for documenting the origin, limitation and ownership history of a work of art in a comprehensible way.

  • What is it like to work with you?

Collaboratively, honestly and directly, we're here to guide the process, to bring in ideas and to move things forward.

Artistic attitude

Color is not a surface.
It is a force.

I'm interested in light and color as their own language, and the night and the infrared spectrum have their own balance and their own tension.

My photographs invite you to leave the familiar gaze and feel the world more consciously.

Some series of works accompany me for many years, not because I want to document a place, but because its meaning only changes with time.

When photography becomes part of architecture.

For the Zurich project “Magic Forest”, photography was not subsequently used as decoration. Format, materiality and spatial effect were developed in dialogue with architecture, light and movement.

The work does not change the place by a loud staging, but by color. The red forest creates tension to the visible concrete architecture and opens up a second space of perception within the building.

For site-specific projects, I develop motif, format and material in dialogue with architecture, light and movement.
